Black & Veatch's microgrid includes two, 25-kilowatt rooftop solar arrays and two natural gas microturbines generating 130 kilowatts of electricity for the 600,000-square-foot complex at 11401 Lamar Ave. The microgrid also includes a 100-kilowatt battery system, 15 geothermal wells pumping cool or warm water from below the earth's surface into the building and a proprietary software platform — Asset360 — monitoring the system's performance. The system is called a microgrid, because it is a functional, miniature version of the electrical power grid that sends power to homes and businesses.
